Holiday food drive -- Thursday December 5th, 2013
YouGiveGoods
Today's spotlight is on SAVE Shore Animal Volunteer Enterprise! If the name sounds familiar it's because S.A.V.E. was called in 24 hours after Hurricane Sandy to assist with all of the homeless and displaced animals, and they were one of the last ones to leave. Over 130 animals were in their care after the storm. They are a very small organization, casual but professional. Like a family, they argue, fight, laugh & cry together, but the animals in their care are always first priority. They do everything they can to help the innocent, beautiful companions until their family comes to take them to their forever homes. Dianne Miele, Drive Starter, shared with us that they have some really wonderful supporters who come through when they need them the most. They have cats and kittens in their care that have special needs: Bambi, who has Cerebellar hypoplasia (wobble kitties) is up for adoption as is Kandi, whose front paw is deformed from birth. SAVE is a wonderful organization, and you can help them out by donating much needed goods here:

SAVE Trift Shop Summer Hours! -- Monday June 3rd, 2013

ATTENTION SAVE ADOPTERS -- Wednesday May 29th, 2013
ATTENTION S.A.V.E. ADOPTERS!!!
S.A.V.E. RESCUE SHELTER
TO HOLD PET MICROCHIPPING CLINIC
If you have adopted from S.A.V.E. and have not yet microchipped your pet,
S.A.V.E. is offering this live saving service.
After Hurricane Sandy we witnessed countless pet owners frantically searching shelters and local rescues looking to see if their animal was rescued and safe.
Since S.A.V.E. has a lifetime return policy, we decided to offer microchipping for your pet for a low fee of $25 which includes your registration and S.A.V.E. as an additional contact. That way if for some reason your pet becomes lost or you become separated from your pet, we can all have the piece of mind that if they are found, they will be returned to you or we will reclaim your animal until you can be reached.
Also if you alert HomeAgain that you lost your Pet, we too will be alerted and will assist in the search to recover your pet. Please contact S.A.V.E. at saveshoreanimals@aol.com or 732-288-2884 to make your appointment.
A microchip is the only permanent form of identification that cannot be altered or removed. The procedure is simple and very similar to a routine shot. A chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted between the pet’s shoulder blades just below the skin. The process takes a few seconds and no anesthetic is required. S.A.V.E will then register your contact information with a national pet recovery database.
When a pet is found, a scanner is used to detect the presence of a microchip. Each chip has a unique number that corresponds with a database like HomeAgain, which contacts the owner. HomeAgain helps reunite over 10,000 pets every month. The annual membership includes services like a 24/7 emergency medical hotline, travel assistance for lost pets and real-time lost pet alerts to volunteer veterinarians, shelters and Pet Rescuers in the area.
We ask you to please take advantage of this special offer
for the future safety of your pet!
All dogs will be required to be leashed and cats to be in pet safe carriers.

FIV Positive Cats -- Sunday April 29th, 2012
Every weekend our fosters bring our FIV positive cats to be seen at PetSmart. They rub up against people and people love them instantly UNTIL the hear they are FIV positive and then they walk away. These cats are non-symptomatic and can live long healthy lives, even live amongst other FIV negative cats. Please read the article below from Best friends sanctuary and share it with your friends. These babies need homes too!!!
FIV: Catching a Bad Case of Rumors
By Kristi Littrell
FIV Facts
1. The Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years.
2. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or other non-felines.
3. FIV cats most often live long, healthy, and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all.
4. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be spread casually - like in litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling and playing. It is rarely spread from a mother to her kittens.
5. The virus can be spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums, or serious, penetrating bite wounds. (Bite wounds of this kind are extremely rare, except in free-roaming, unneutered tomcats.)
6. A neutered cat, in a home, is extremely unlikely to infect other cats, if properly introduced.
7. Many vets are not educated about FIV since the virus was only discovered 15 years ago.
8. FIV-positive cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and free from stress, feed them a high-quality diet, keep and treat any secondary problems as soon as they arise.
Despite what many people think, cats with this condition can live perfectly long, happy, healthy lives.
Please please consider giving one of our FIV Positive cats a home.
